Electric Tractors - Valley Oak Tool Company for sustainable farming

The Electric Tractor is Here!

Electric tractors can help us in our efforts to adopt more sustainable farming practices. We think they're long overdue. While electric automobiles are challenging because of range and weight considerations, tractors are especially well suited for electric operation. An electric tractor rarely travels far from its charging station, and increased weight on a tractor equals increased traction. Moreover, when it comes to torque, nothing beats an electric motor. Here at Valley Oak Tool Company we’ve converted Farmall Cubs into electric tractors.

Farmall Cub Electric Conversion

The Electric Cub is quiet and powerful!

Recently, we were cultivating broccoli beds at GRUB CSA Farm using the Electric Cub. The tractor was so quiet that some of the taller broccoli leaves could be heard breaking.

Cultivating row crops is a pleasure using this easy-to-drive tractor with no fumes, no carburetor, no oil changes, and no heavy liquid fuel to deal with. It’s pretty darn nice. And it’s powerful, with full torque even at low RPMs.

With its wide wheelbase and high clearance, the venerable (and ubiquitous) Farmall Cub is ideal for row-crop tillage and cultivation.

Electric Cub - Belly-mounted double toolbar

Our custom-designed lift-arm assembly with a belly-mounted double tool bar allows for superb visibility and control while cultivating up to three rows at once. You can add implements to rotary mow, sickle-bar mow, plow, grade dirt or gravel, make beds, or seed beds. The Electric Cub will also pull a harvest cart or a trailer full of compost, wood, or produce.

Our Electric Cub Conversion preserves the classic lines of the original Farmall Cub

This is our flagship production-model Electric Cub. These tractors have been thoroughly reconditioned, from top to bottom. All the original parts have been rebuilt during our painstaking conversion process.

First, we perform a complete rebuild of the drive train and the chassis, including the transmission and final drives. Next, we add our custom-manufactured steel framework and sheet metal, preserving the classic lines of the Cub. Then we install a powerful and efficient electric motor, controls, and batteries. We apply fresh paint and install new tires. Finally, we outfit the tractor with an electric linear-actuated lift-arm assembly and a mid-mounted double toolbar.

New electric-conversion components include:

The Valley Oak Lift-Arm Assembly with a mid-mounted double toolbar is ideal for cultivating vegetables and flowers.

Electric Tuff-bilt (partially reconditioned)
SOLD

This one-of-a-kind tractor is one of our earlier conversions.

The electric conversion preserves the original weight distribution of the Tuff-bilt

The Tuff-bilt is modeled after the Allis Chalmers Model G, and has the same across-the-bed visibility. The unique design of this tractor affords the operator an unobstructed view of the mid-mounted toolbar, providing for exceptional visibility and control while cultivating. The electric conversion mimics the original weight distribution, centering the batteries and motor near the rear wheels.

We have replaced the original lightweight mid-mounted three-point hitch with a heavier-gauge version of the excellent parallelogram-lift assembly found on the Model G. It is very rigid and strong. An electric linear actuator replaces the original hydraulic-ram system, so there are no leaky hydraulic hoses. The double toolbars are standard 2¼" on the diamond. We can provide knives, sweeps, standards, and clamps if you don't have your own.

This tractor was leased for two seasons by GRUB CSA Farm. When we got it back, we updated the battery tray, installed new batteries, replaced the front tires, rebuilt the transmission, and completely redesigned the layout of the electric controls. We added hub extenders to the rear wheels to give it a 60" wheel spread (center to center) front and rear. All fluids in the transmission, differential, and final drives have been replaced.

The unique design of the Tuff-bilt offers unparalleled visibility for cultivation.Electric-conversion components include:

Electric Farmall Cub (partially reconditioned)

Electric Farmall Cub

This is our first Electric Cub. It has done a great job cultivating a variety of crops at GRUB CSA Farm.

This tractor features the Valley Oak lift arm assembly, a double toolbar, and the original Cub manual-lift lever. Knives and sweeps (pictured) are not included, but may be purchased separately. The batteries are four years old, and are functioning very well (they were used on the Tuff-bilt). It has excellent used tires, new gauges, and a removable drawbar.

Unlike our standard production models, the drive train was not rebuilt, but it is in fine shape. The toolbox is great for wrenches, a hammer, your lunch, what have you; it's big. Some parts are unpainted.

The Electric Farmall Cub features the Valley Oak Lift-Arm Assembly

This Electric Cub is unique in that we retained the original hood, which doesn't accommodate a linear actuator. If you come to Chico to test drive the tractors, you will find that the manual lever works fairly easily. While it lacks the linear actuator of our production models, and isn't quite as pretty, this prototype is a great performer and can be had at a considerable cost savings.
